Visual C++ Redistributable setup failed

“Why won't this installer finish? I need it for a game.”

The Microsoft Visual C++ dialog with a fatal error near the end of the progress bar.

Likely cause

A newer or the same version of the Visual C++ runtime is already on the PC. Windows Setup refuses to install an older package over it (error 0x80070666), which games still surface as a generic “setup failed” dialog.

Read the real error
On the failed dialog, click “Log file”. Confirm the line containing 0x80070666 or “A later version of the product is already installed.”

Check installed runtimes
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Search for “Visual C++”. If “Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64)” is already listed, you do not need this installer.

Repair instead of reinstalling
Click the existing Visual C++ 2015–2022 entry → Modify → Repair. Reboot if Windows asks, then launch the game again.

Only then install the matching architecture
If the runtime is missing, download VC_redist.x64.exe from Microsoft’s current supported page — not a third-party mirror. Run it, then try the game.
